Lyrebird College is an independent school in Coldstream in the Yarra Ranges, pursuing excellence in the education of children aged 5 – 18 with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
We address the needs of children with high needs autism (ASD 3). Our students receive a quality outcome-focused education in a fun and safe environment delivered by expert staff. With a whole school approach applying the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) program, Lyrebird College takes their education and associated support to the next stage of delivery.
Our Journey
An Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong condition that affects 1 in 100 Australian children, which means 1 in 100 Australian families are impacted by an ASD.
What is Autism or an Autism Spectrum Disorder?
The Australian Medical Association defines autism as “developmental disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, impaired communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours and sensory sensitivities”.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a term that is used to recognise that the range of difficulties associated with Autism occur on a spectrum, with individuals impacted at varying degrees.
Why establish an Autism school?
The education choice for a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is an important decision a family has to make. It is even more important for those children with complex needs who require high levels of support.
We believe in the right setting all children can learn and exceed expectations. The lack of enough “right settings” led to the idea in 2016 to establish Lyrebird College.
Lyrebird College is located in Coldstream in the Yarra Valley.
